Dallas sits on the Trinity River in the center of Dallas County where major Interstate highways converge. The city’s expansion began when securing rail service and Dallas found itself in a wonderful geographic position for transportation of abundant regional products. Cotton became the region's principal cash crop, and Elm Street in Dallas was its market. Dallas became the world center for the leather and buffalo hide trade.
